Happy Birthday…Plus a Whole Lot More

Posted on | September 17, 2010 | 9 Comments

Today is my husband Kelly’s birthday! Hurray! Excuse for cake!

With Jack entering year two soon, I find it fascinating that he is starting to look more and more like my husband, but as his personality emerges I think that my genes are a bit more prevalent.

I never really thought a lot about how I was as a kid until I saw Jack turning out more and more like me. Of course these are early days, but I wonder how much of this is ingrained.

And so we turn back to my husband. Kelly, along with being funny, caring and a great dad, he is a crazily anal stats tracker. Like hysterically so. He builds (happily and enthusiastically) programs and spreadsheets to keep track of pretty much every aspect of his life that can be kept track of. Some of these things include: money & budget, calories, stock market, hockey stats, real estate trends, fitness and I’m sure (I’m SURE) there are other spreadsheets that I don’t even know about.

I found his grade 7 agenda on a recent crap-sort and kept it. I thought it was funny and you can see the beginning of his need to record and compare. The book is filled with days like these, with few gaps, and is consistent from the first day to the last. Here are a few average days. I particularly enjoy how social nuances and feelings are listed next to school subjects.

Some notes:
1. Click on the images to bring up a larger size.
2. “Av” means “average day”.
3. His handwriting is exactly the same 20+ years later.

Happy Birthday dear! Love you!

I enjoy that he scheduled getting into trouble. Well, what else is one gonna do on a darn old dumb day?

Oh my god. I loved this! Especially that it brought up old gossip. I remember Curtis fighting Shamus, and I also remember Jamie crying in music. This is because we substituted Jamie’s name for Lester’s name in Lester the Lobster from PEI. We were evil.

I think my favorite is: Friday, Feb. 9th, barfed six times; Saturday, Feb. 10th: John and Mike slept over.

    Totally logical. Good narrative. Awesome.

I also particularly enjoyed “Barfed 6 times” followed by “Got Double Dragon II”.
    Very inspiring.

Yes, definitely, the barf listing is also my favourite.
It is also freaking adorable that he scheduled in having fun on his weekends. We should all do that.
    Awesome post!

I’m a little late to the party but I really enjoyed this too. Man, I got mentioned almost as many times as Jamey did! Sweet!

Ok, so I can’t spell Jamie.

The other thing is, why were we still singing that stupid lobster song in grade 7? My wife, a “city” kid, had already robbed her first liquor store by that age…hmmmm…small towns.

I think I met Lester when I lived in PEI. He was delightful. Crusty, but delightful.
